Byagården Preschool

Purpose‑Driven Play, Built Responsibly
Located on the outskirts of Ljungby, Sweden, Byagården Preschool serves roughly 140 children ages 1 to 5. When it came time to renovate the preschool’s main playground, leaders knew they wanted a space that encouraged physical play, welcomed every child, and offered a wide variety of activities—all while maintaining a small environmental footprint.
But sustainability wasn’t just an add‑on consideration; it shaped every decision. The preschool needed to meet the municipality’s requirements for responsible procurement, but they also wanted the space to reflect their own commitment to environmental responsibility.
This led to the selection of KOMPAN’s GreenLine products, with the main play structure built from EcoCore™ HDPE panels made from recycled ocean waste and TexMade™ posts crafted from discarded textiles and post‑consumer recycled plastic.
Headmistress Annika Lönn sums it up best: “This is sustainable development—plain and simple!”
"The most important criteria are actually that the material is not hazardous, that it is durable and that it is also recyclable. And we work like that with sustainable materials throughout the whole municipality."
Annika Lönn — Headmistress, Byagården Preschool
Designed Around the Curriculum
While sustainability shaped the overall , the preschool’s core educational goal for the new playground was to meet curriculum objectives for physical activity. They wanted a space where children of all ages and abilities could confidently develop their gross motor skills. The large Moments™ play structure delivers on that ambition, offering a wide range of activities that build physical, creative, cognitive, and social‑emotional abilities. Flexotop™ ECO surfacing ensures full accessibility at ground level, while the stairs make elevated play available to even more children.
The water play structure——further supports the preschool’s aim to spark creativity through hands‑on exploration. Children collaborate, communicate, and experiment with materials, strengthening logical thinking and understanding of cause and effect. According to Byagården’s teachers, the excitement is nonstop: “The children ask every single day, ‘When are we going to connect the water hose?’” And once the hose is turned on, they flock to the area to build, explore, and immerse themselves in the sensory experience of sand, water, and mud.
