Where Play Blooms: Pollinator-Themed Spaces for Connection

Teravalis is a nearly 40,000-acre master-planned community built to connect its residents to nature through sustainable, intentional design. At Floreo, the first developed neighborhood, connected walking trails lead families through its network of parks, green spaces, and other amenities. When the customer wanted to go beyond the typical nature-based playground concept with a collective theme of local pollinators for its seven playgrounds, the collaboration between KOMPAN, Inc. Design, KOMPAN Design Studios, and Solution Partner “OpenSpace Designs” resulted in a collection of custom Robinia and Corocord structures—each more impressive than the last.

Busy Bees on the Playground

Children and caretakers alike are drawn to the Hummingbird’s vibrant wingspan and Bumblebee’s curious gaze. Climbing challenges fit for all ages keep children engaged, as there must be another way to reach the Honeycomb Sky Cabin or Tree Tower.

As a play interpretation of the actual pollinators often seen in the surrounding landscaping, these play structures ignite children’s creative and cognitive thinking by connecting them to the natural environment around them. The variety of climbing challenges work cross-coordination and balance. Physical skills, like cross-coordination and balance, are worked while bouldering across the Bumblebee’s wings or traversing up and around the Hummingbird. Hangout points, like the hammocks at the Hummingbird Nest’s top level, are perfect for quieter moments of rest or a great conversation.
