Indoor and Outdoor Play

Southside Community Center is the first of four new or renovated community centers planned for Richmond, Virginia. The City wanted to provide a safe outlet for at-risk youth by investing in a space that'd host a variety of educational and recreational activities, and providing families with an indoor playground, the first in Richmond, became a priority. With the team of architects and landscape architects, KOMPAN provided two play solutions that give children a secure, accessible place to thrive and grow.

“As parks and recreation professionals we strive to create a sense of place for our community. The new indoor/outdoor play amenities create a dynamic atmosphere for not only the local community but for our region. The unique RVA letters design for the indoor play structure is symbolic of Richmond being the heart of our region, but greater than its city limits. This creative space will excite imaginations, ignite new friends, and inspire lasting memories. These endearing qualities and the stellar design features will create a true sense of place in the hearts of many generations to come."

Chris Frelke, Director of Parks and Recreation, City of Richmond, VA

Climbing Fun and City Pride

Three play towers, either equipped with the City's official seal of featuring other RVA-area themes, make a statement in the indoor play space. Connected to the larger play structure is a COROMESH rope net that offers climbing and sliding play, as well as hangout hammocks for socializing.

Climbing play continues outdoors with a COROCORD Cubite. Younger children will find approachable play challenges and fun on the Double Tower with Bridge. A swing set with ADA-accessible seating and Spicas will thrill children with rocking or rotational movement.

KOMPAN is working with the City of Richmond to bring playgrounds to two more of its community centers.

“The grand opening of Southside Community Center comes on the heels of over a decade of community engagement and thoughtful planning. Paramount to the success and impact they provide to the surrounding neighborhoods of south Richmond, the indoor and outdoor play spaces are transformational and have captivated the awe and wonder of countless children and families already. Our design team had a blast dreaming up these spaces and we could not have done it without the vision and partnership with KOMPAN.”
