High-Capacity Play for Every Child

When the City of Tampa was looking to update the aging playground equipment at the Kate Jackson Community Center's Anderson Playground, they wanted to create a destination outdoor space that'd engage users of all abilities. By working with KOMPAN, the City of Tampa was able to transform its park into a truly inclusive destination with a GIANT Dome and poured-in-place rubber surfacing. With a high-capacity, multi-user playground solution in a single footprint, play is made more accessible to South Tampa families.

Shared movement, sensory choice, inclusive play

The GIANT Dome’s design layers activities—ground‑level crawl and bounce membranes, swaying ropes, open climbing plates, hammocks and high nets—so children can choose movement, sensory or social experiences at their own comfort and ability level. Horizontal membranes and low-entry elements create approachable places for younger children or those with sensory needs, while progressive climbs, gliding paths, and collaborative net spaces encourage older or more adventurous climbers to practice strength, coordination and cooperative skills. Together these features promote mixed ability interaction: siblings and friends can play side‑by‑side, progress at their own pace, and meet in shared spaces—exactly the kind of inclusive, developmentally rich play environment Tampa wanted.

Anderson Playground at KJC -Walker Family Shot.197df360

The $550,000 playground renovation project was made possible in part with the Hyde Park Community Fund. The Florida nonprofit is dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and reconstruction of historic spaces in the South Tampa neighborhood. A major contributor to Kate Jackson Community Center's green spaces, Hyde Park Community Fund and Tampa's network of parks was Harold Walker, Jr. A local trailblazing entrepreneur, Walker also worked to preserve the natural beauty of Hyde Park, dedicating his time and resources to the planting of live oak trees throughout the neighborhood and at Anderson Park. When Walker passed away in February 2025, the playground restoration had not yet begun. But like a seed that takes a century to grow into a towering tree, Walker's family remembers him for his deeply rooted virtues in creating lasting impact that will stand for years to come.

"He had a fulfilling career but my dad, Harold Walker, Jr.'s passion was giving his time and energy to his community. He dedicated countless hours to the growth and beautification of the Hyde Park area. He spent years helping plan and garner support to improve Anderson Park and Kate Jackson playground. Though he is gone far too soon and isn't here to see the new improvements, I know he's smiling down watching his grandchildren and so many other kids enjoy the new play structure. As I watch my kids play from under the shade of an oak he so loved, I am confident we are honoring his legacy."

- Whitney Walker Brewer, Harold's daughter
