Bringing Viking history to life through play

At Kongernes Jelling, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Denmark's most significant historical destinations, the challenge was clear: how do you make ancient Viking stories feel relevant and engaging for modern visitors? The answer was a bespoke destination playground that transforms mythology into a hands-on experience. By inviting children and families to climb, explore, and play their way through the stories of the Viking Age, the playground creates a memorable gateway to Jelling's rich cultural heritage and encourages visitors to connect with history in a completely new way.

"A UNESCO World Heritage Site can sometimes feel distant or difficult to relate to. The playground creates a playful entrance that helps children understand and connect with the place they have come to experience."

Morten Theilmann Jørgensen

Museum Director, Kongernes Jelling

Custom play that strengthens the visitor experience

Every element of the Mythical Playground was custom-designed to support the stories that shaped the Viking Age. The towering Midgard Serpent winds through the site, allowing children to experience the scale of one of Norse mythology's most famous creatures, while sculptural play elements inspired by wolves, runestones, and Viking imagery create a cohesive storytelling environment. Developed in close collaboration with architects and heritage experts, the playground combines high play value with authentic visual references to the historic landscape of Jelling, creating an experience that inspires both active play and curiosity about the past.
