How do you maintain an outdoor playground?

Congratulations! By working with KOMPAN, you have chosen a high-quality product that, with proper maintenance, will withstand the test of time and many years of use.

As the owner, you are now responsible for maintaining the playground and its surroundings to ensure all play structures remain safe. In order to protect children's safety and enhance the play experience, we strongly suggest regular maintenance once your outdoor playground is installed.

Playground maintenance includes regular inspections and updates of playground equipment as needed. Proper care includes scheduled cleaning, checking for hazards, ensuring the equipment is in good working condition and caring for the surrounding grounds.

We help you play safe

Let's look at the best ways to ensure all play structures and the surrounding resilient surfaces are inspected and maintained regularly:

1. Cleaning

A clean playground is a safe playground. Ensure litter, debris and food are removed to prevent injuries and control pests. Also, ensure adjacent areas and walkways are clean and accessible. Any damaged or broken equipment must be removed immediately and kept out of commission until repaired. This will ensure guaranteed safety and functional reliability of the product. We recommend that high-usage or older equipment be inspected multiple times a week.

Please follow the daily/weekly maintenance checklist, which can be provided upon request.

2. Maintenance

Over time, some bolts may become loose through heavy use, and the play structure can become undone or wobbly. Loose components on play structures can cause a dangerous pinch, a crush, or shear points. Therefore, all nuts, bolts, fasteners, and screws must be checked periodically.

Please follow the maintenance checklist for weekly, scheduled, and annual inspections, which can be provided upon request.

3. Repairs

Occasionally, parts may need to be replaced due to breakage or wear. Parts should be replaced immediately to avoid dangerous conditions. Repairs should be completed following the maintenance manual and the installation instructions provided by KOMPAN. Information about replacement parts and copies of installation instructions can be obtained through your KOMPAN sales consultant or on KOMPAN Master. If broken equipment is not immediately repairable, action must be taken to restrict access to that portion of the play structure or the whole structure if necessary.

Why is playground maintenance important?

Timely playground inspections and maintenance are vital for ensuring children's safety. Following our maintenance instructions is also necessary for the products to be covered by the KOMPAN General warranty. Robinia maintenance

Wood swells and contracts with temperature and humidity changes, which can cause openings along a log. This natural reaction might occur on Robinia timber posts and typically is not a safety or quality issue. However, routine inspections and maintenance are vital and severe deformation must be considered when appearing on essential areas inside the play structure.

We have designed a Robinia information pack that details the nature of the timber and how to care for it in the unique Australian climate - contact us to chat about Robinia and how you can best maintain a wooden playground from KOMPAN.

Flexotop maintenance

To ensure the optimum appearance and longevity of our Flexotop surfacing, it is important to carry out regular inspections to detect vandalism, shoe marks or other damage before it spreads to a larger area. All repairs should be carried out by professionals with a Flexotop certificate. Please follow our detailed maintenance recommendations and refer to the Flexotop repairs datasheet for more information on the process.

When is the right time to replace playground equipment?

1. An unused playground is a clear sign that you need to consider updating your playground equipment or that your playground is out of date.

2. You receive complaints from concerned parents or users of the playground, which is a clear sign that there is a safety issue to be addressed.

3. Broken equipment beyond repair – It's time to call in the playground or maintenance experts.
