Inclusive, Thrilling Play in the Heart of the City

When the Kiwanis Club of Lynchburg was looking to commemorate 100 years of engaging and supporting children in the "City of Seven Hills," a playground emerged as the ideal long-range project for its centennial. The service organization approached the City of Lynchburg with the idea, and it was decided the Riverfront Park, a downtown community hub undergoing an $8 million renovation, was the optimal location. The project, including a top-of-the-line amphitheater and restroom facility, enhances the area already frequented by outdoor trail users. The Kiwanis Club of Lynchburg and City of Lynchburg aimed to create an equally impressive playground to complete the space. They ultimately chose KOMPAN's solution for its unique, captivating designs that not only look intriguing, but are proven through research to keep Lynchburg children of all abilities playing longer and together in this destination space.

"Despite unforeseen challenges, our Club, the City, and KOMPAN were all committed to completing this playground as a gift to the children of Lynchburg. We take a multifaceted approach to empowering our youth, and an inclusive, outdoor space that helps grow the next generation of community leaders aligns with that purpose.”

Ed McCann, Co-chair of Centennial Committee, Kiwanis Club of Lynchburg

The playground’s main structure, a Four Mast Octa Net + Bouncing Net, supports both physical and social skill development with its rope climbing challenges and high capacity. The BLOQX™ 3 geometric structure offers more climbing fun that increases muscle strength, coordination, and strategic thinking. The Universal Carousel is a wheelchair-accessible carousel that invites users to take pleasure in the thrills of spinning together. A swing set, featuring two ADA-accessible Shell Nest seats, lets users of all mobility capabilities enjoy swaying in the air. The Supernova challenges children to work together to balance on its tilted, rotating ring. The Spinner Bowl and Spica offer spinning fun for users to enjoy alone or in small groups. The Music Play Panel combines musical exploration with social interaction, enhancing creative play and teamwork for young children. Lastly, the pour-in-place (PIP) surfacing allows all users to move about the playground with greater ease.
