Themed Play for Early Learners

In Spring 2022, residents of Humble, Texas, approved a $775-million bond proposal to fund facility improvements and technological enhancements for their rapidly expanding town, just 20 miles outside Houston. Understanding that learning through movement is equally important as the lessons in the classroom, the Humble Independent School District (ISD) plans to bring themed play to its schools.

"You've Got A Friend" on the Playground

The playground at Humble ISD Early Childhood Center invites students to step into adventure with its playful toy theme. The playground equipment, made specifically to support smaller statures and growing developmental abilities, is intended for children ages 2-5.

A Western-themed play tower hosts a variety of climbing, sliding, and tactile play opportunities into one space. A wheelchair-accessible Universal Carousel mimics a Wild West corral, inviting all users inside to enjoy the thrill of spinning together. A “Triple Shifter” rocket play structure ignites children’s curiosity with a variety of play options, and the UFO dome features rope climbing fun specifically designed for a younger child’s needs. A Monkey Trails net structure tests children with three different rope challenges. A Three-Seater Carousel puts a spin on a traditional swing set by looping its riders in a circle. Children will have a blast pretending to drive in the car play structure, featuring a steering wheel, gear shift, and other kid-sized, movable parts. Children can enjoy rocking back and forth on horse-, T. rex-, and dog-themed springers, and they can reach for the skies on spinning playground equipment. The toy theme continues with the ADA-accessible, rubber poured-in-place (PIP) surfacing, featuring a western hat, letter blocks, a piggy bank, and aliens in its design.

Benefits of Themed Play

Themed play invites children into their own world of unstructured, imaginative play that promotes creativity—no caregiver instructions needed. Whether it be an alien spacecraft, rocket ship, and getaway car, these play structures are "transformed" into the bona fide versions through what is known as make-believe play, pretend play, or symbolic play. While maintaining the understanding of what's real and what isn't, a child engaged in themed play is enhancing their language development, supporting social-emotional skills, and reenforcing critical thinking. Themed Play fosters a setting where children act out social behaviors and express themselves while practicing vital skill sets. Younger children in particular are drawn to transportation-themed playground equipment, so a small vehicle play equipment addition is sure to be a hit!

The KOMPAN Play Institute recently published their findings on the benefits of make-believe play. Dive into the research here.
