Themed Play That Makes a Splash!

In Spring 2022, residents of Humble, Texas, approved a $775-million bond proposal to fund facility improvements and technological enhancements for their rapidly expanding town, just 20 miles outside Houston. Understanding that learning through movement is equally important as the lessons in the classroom, the Humble Independent School District (ISD) plans to bring themed play to all its elementary schools and outdoor fitness sites to its middle schools.

Giving each school playground a unique, original theme was a major pillar of the district's project, and "Under the Sea" was chosen for the Deerwood campus. By working with KOMPAN and the KOMPAN Design Studio, ocean-themed play is brought above the surface to create an inclusive play space for students of all ages and abilities.

Climbing Nets, Towers, and Swinging Fun for Deerwood Dolphins

The playground invites children to dive into an ocean-inspired world of play, where movement, imagination and discovery come together. Designed with school-aged children in mind, the equipment supports a wide range of abilities and encourages active play through climbing, sliding, spinning and social interaction.

At the heart of the space, the Whale Tail Tower combines a slide with a fishing net rope climber, offering an exciting mix of ascent and descent, while the Lighthouse Tower adds double the sliding fun with two slides branching from a single structure. Spinning play features throughout the playground, including the Buoy Tipi Carousel, Sand Dollar Spinner Plate, Life Preserver Supernova and Hurricane Saturn Carousel, invite children to experience the thrill of rotation in different ways.

Gentle motion and cooperative play are encouraged through animal-themed equipment such as the Dolphin and Seahorse Springers, the Clownfish Seesaw and the Starfish Spicas. A Coral Reef swing set with ADA-accessible seating ensures inclusive play, while Hill Climbers and sculpted 3D pour-in-place play mounds featuring ocean wildlife add opportunities for climbing, balancing and imaginative exploration. An ocean-themed communication board supports social interaction and creative storytelling, tying the underwater theme together across the play space.
