Acorn Park School is part of the Outcomes First Group, which operates around 40 Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools, colleges, and homes across the UK. Acorn Park serves children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) whose needs make it too challenging for them to attend their local mainstream school.
To better support these students, the school partnered with KOMPAN to create a thoughtfully designed playground tailored to their sensory, emotional, and physical needs. The space offers clear structure, predictable zoning, and a balance of calming and stimulating activities—ensuring every child can engage at their own comfort level while developing confidence through play.
"The signs and the play equipment extend their ability to express and regulate their emotions. This makes it easier for them to concentrate when they are back in the classroom"
- Selina Wightman, Therapy and Wellbeing
The playground is intentionally designed so children and adults can easily see and understand the space. Its open, visually transparent layout—achieved even with taller play structures—helps everyone confidently navigate and engage with the environment.
Clear signage throughout each zone explains which equipment offers more energetic movement and which provides calmer, sensory‑soothing experiences. These guides support not only the students but also caregivers and therapists who may be unfamiliar with how different play activities contribute to sensory development. With this information, they can quickly identify the right equipment for group play or individual needs.
When students do want or need more stimulating sensory input, the playground offers a range of dynamic options that encourage movement, engagement, and energy release. The MUSA (Multi‑Use Sports Area) supports high‑energy activity and teamwork, while Bloqx™ Climbing Structures deliver challenging climbs that build strength, balance, and problem‑solving skills. The Cocowave Pendulum Swing provides both exhilarating group movement and focused solo swinging, giving children the strong vestibular input that supports body awareness and emotional regulation.
