A well‑designed school playground is far more than a space for breaktime… it’s a daily contributor to pupils’ wellbeing, resilience, and readiness to learn. A high‑quality outdoor environment supports the ambitions of the Curriculum for Excellence by encouraging curiosity, cooperation, and active learning, while also aligning closely with GIRFEC through promoting safe, nurturing, and inclusive play for every child. It can even play a key role in attracting new families to your school.
At KOMPAN, we design school playgrounds that turn your educational vision into a practical, sustainable reality — the right play opportunities, at the right time, within the right budget, from concept to installation!
We understand the pressures facing Scottish schools today: constrained budgets, tight project timelines, a strong safeguarding duty, and a continual focus on improving wellbeing outcomes. The right playground or outdoor fitness area helps meet these priorities in one place - increasing physical activity, strengthening social and emotional development, and supporting staff in creating a safe, well‑supervised environment.
Critical fall heights, safety zones and clearance: Specify by height, surface, and use zones to match the equipment and age specific zones.
Standards & compliance: Work to EN 1176, local requirements and make documentation easy to share across stakeholders and procurement. All designs comply with relevant safety standards for peace of mind.
Supervision & sightlines: Design out blind spots; zone by age (e.g., nursery, primary 1 to 3, primary 4 to 7); create staff vantage points that reduce staffing strain. Good supervision layout with clear sightlines to minimise blind spots.
Risk-benefit balance: Offer gradual challenge that builds confidence while meeting safety guidance - particularly important for tweens.
Universal design: Ground-level play, ramps, contrast surfacing and sensory options to welcome every ability.

More movement in the school day
Up to 40% of children’s daily physical activity can be achieved during school break and lunch time when the school playground equipment is thoughtfully equipped and inviting. Well-equipped spaces consistently lift activity levels across age groups. Involving tweens (ages 9–12) in the planning process keeps them engaged for longer, reducing the drop-off in activity that often appears in this age group.

Social, emotional and cognitive benefits
Great outdoor play equipment for schools goes far beyond fitness. It nurtures cooperation, communication and conflict resolution; it offers brain breaks that restore attention and executive function; and it supports inclusive peer interactions that carry back into the classroom.

Inclusion and equity, by design
Universal design principles - ground-level play, accessible routes, transfer platforms, sensory play zones and quiet zones - ensure every child can join in safely and confidently. When inclusion is embedded from day one, playgrounds support behaviour, belonging and whole school well-being.

Broomlea Primary School
New staff members at Broomlea Primary School had previously worked with in other ASN schools in Scotland and upon joining Broomlea, they were tasked to look into revamping their playground. Being aware of KOMPAN’s quality of equipment as well as the excellent service provided. We were contacted to visit the Primary School to start the process of ensuring the new inclusive playground equipment could cater to a wide range of ages and abilities. These consultations allowed us to provide tailored advice and suitable suggestions for wheelchair accessibility, sensory play, and activities that help children self-regulate. This open dialogue with the school was invaluable, as it meant we could focus on what truly mattered for Broomlea and their pupils.
“The children learn so much through play and having the equipment to be able to do that, it just pushes them on so much with their development.”
Lizzie Hamill, Support for Learning Practitioner, Broomlea Primary School
