Modifying a MUGA to Make Room for Additional Playground Equipment

Ebury Bridge Road Estate is situated in Westminster, London. Existing housing blocks are being demolished and new modern, sustainable housing is being introduced. As per planning conditions, the site must have a suitable play space for children living on the estate, whilst the estate is being modernised. The only suitable space to install the playground was part of an existing MUGA (multi use games area), which was also being used as a car park. This would enable building works of the new properties to take place, in addition the relocated play space would then be demolished in under 5 years to make way for further living accommodation. KOMPAN were asked to meet the client to discuss options on the existing play equipment and to see what could be salvaged. Also discussed were costings for repairing and relocating items into the nearby ball court (MUGA) area.

KOMPAN's Solution to Save £30k

KOMPAN inspected all items of equipment with a view to replacing the highest-worn parts. A layout design was produced splitting the MUGA into two sections and included the following:

  • Retaining the sports area

  • Relocating exciting play equipment

  • Further improvements including line markings on the sports area

  • Ground graphics on the tarmac in the play area

  • Additional seating for parents and carers including a picnic table

  • Opening up the whole space

  • Repainting some of the equipment to extend its life and improve the look

"Other companies were also asked for proposals, however KOMPAN listened to our needs and came up with the best proposal and value for money. The project was implemented extremely well with good communication with both the onsite and offsite teams.”
