Wish Park Outdoor Gym, Brighton and Hove City Council

A modern, durable, and self guided sea-side community outdoor gym
Wish Park is a vibrant and much loved community space in Brighton and Hove, known for its expansive green fields, children’s playground, and existing recreational amenities. With a strong culture of outdoor activity already present, the park was identified as the ideal location for a new, fully accessible outdoor gym designed to support community wellbeing and inclusive exercise opportunities.
The project aimed to deliver a modern, durable, and self guided outdoor gym that could be used safely by people of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels, without the need for supervision.
Overview: Wish Park is already a lively destination, full of families, runners, dog walkers, and people of all ages enjoying the outdoors. Building the gym here meant enhancing a space that residents already loved, while giving them new opportunities to stay active, social, and healthy. The location of the site is near the sea so careful consideration had to be given for the durability of the fitness equipment.
Design: From the outset, accessibility and inclusivity shaped every decision. The gym needed to be usable without supervision, welcoming to beginners, yet challenging enough for experienced athletes. This meant selecting equipment that offered intuitive operation, adjustable resistance, and a wide range of exercise possibilities. All equipment was also chosen for its ability to withstand seaside conditions, meeting ISO 12944 C5I corrosion standards and constructed from galvanised, painted metal.
The selection of the KOMPAN equipment reflects a commitment to offering a complete fitness experience. The area offers safe, controlled resistance training suitable for all ability levels, with features that make them also accessible to wheelchair users as well. To enrich the space further, fitness markings were integrated into the open training area. These extend the gym’s functionality beyond equipment, supporting warm-ups and local group classes.
Outcome: A fully compliant, inclusive outdoor gym that supports shared use across age groups and abilities, delivering genuine health benefits, and provides long-term value for the community.

The overwhelmingly positive response from residents, many of whom now visit daily, shows that the design has achieved its purpose. As one local user put it: “It is the best gym in the area….as good as an indoor gym.” That sentiment captures the heart of the project: bringing high quality fitness opportunities outdoors, where everyone can enjoy them.
Community Impact
Ultimately, the design aims to create more than just a place to exercise. It establishes a social hub where people can meet, train, and feel part of something shared. The result is a modern, safe, and inviting fitness space that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Wish Park community.
