Willoughton Parish Council wanted to renew their existing play space. We compiled a solution which retained some play value favourites from the previous equipment and utilised our themed boat multi-play unit as the centrepiece which the play area then formed around, giving the area a sense of identity and act as a beacon to play. The wheelchair carousel offers inclusivity and broadened accessibility with wheelchair accessible picnic benches and additional seating installed throughout to provide a space for congregating and socialising. Freestanding equipment such as a diverse range of swings (including a nest swing and You & Me seat), rotating net climber, 3-way seesaw and a balance trail would all contribute to a space with a holistic approach to play value.
The combination of equipment ensures a diverse user group can access equipment appropriate to their age creating a ‘round’ play space where all items are visible and key to creating a community feel where adults can relax and talk whilst being able to supervise users across the whole space.
Steel equipment and eliminating the existing bark were key decisions in providing low maintenance and the longest possible life for the new play space. Repairing and retaining the existing beloved slide in the area made the client happy and reinforced our approach to adding value and sustainability.
Since its completion, the area has been well used by the community who are extremely happy with the amount of new equipment, variation and innovation. The new surfacing and removal of bark has increased accessibility whilst the overall feel of the site is now reinvigorated.

“On behalf of Willoughton Parish Council, I would like to thank you for refurbishing our play area for us and making the project run so smoothly. We now have a facility the village can be proud of and judging by the number of children using it, I think we can safely say it is a huge success. We have had many favourable comments, and it has been a pleasure to deal with you all. So, thank you for working with us. We very much appreciate it.”
Hazel Fox, Clerk/RFO, Willoughton Parish Council
