Town Centre Gardens, Stevenage Borough Council

From closed playground to setting sail for adventure
Town Centre Gardens had been out of commission for over three years and Stevenage Borough Council wanted to replace it and create a jewel in the crown for the park within its gorgeous surroundings. Their brief included a play area for 0-12 year olds that could be very inclusive, accessible to all, and also use materials to blend in with the natural backdrop aesthetic that the gardens offered.
We worked with many stakeholders within the project to deliver the key needs such as low maintenance, inclusivity, exciting and challenging play, themed play, and to also fit in with the beautiful gardens and surroundings.
Our design included year round access with wet pour surfacing to all areas. This makes the area accessible and user friendly for everyone. There are clearly defined pathways that lead to quiet picnic spaces and also to the dynamic play areas. The layout offers a very cohesive and flowing design allowing many users to move easily through the site. The new play area includes a wheelchair carousel, inclusive trampoline and seesaw, as well as many colourful ground graphics and 3D shapes, including a shark, fish and turtle.
The massive pirate ship is the centrepiece of the play area allowing a lot of children to play together at once. The Cliff Rider challenges even the most able children, while exciting dynamic items such as a WeHopper, Toddler Carousel, plus the Track Ride adds even more excitement to the area. This is now a destination play area for Stevenage and the surrounding area. It’s going to be used heavily for years and years to come. The local children will come, make new friends, laugh, socialise, learn new skills, play and have fun!

“Over the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with KOMPAN on six play areas, and they have consistently exceeded our expectations. Every team member, from the area sales manager to the project manager and the skilled subcontractors they bring on board demonstrates professionalism, friendliness, and in-depth knowledge of all things play. Their passion for creating exceptional play spaces is evident, and they continue to lead the way in innovative play equipment.”
