The brief was to supply and install a wooden pirate ship themed playground which would reflect the history of the site and pay homage to the lido that used to be there in the '80s and '90s. When working on the brief our designers kept a waterpark theme in mind, adding dolphins and nautical-themed elements where possible.

There was also a heavy element of landscaping involved, giving visitors space to sit, play, relax, and watch over their children. With this in mind, KOMPAN were asked to supply a hard-wearing and natural-looking playground, which is why we chose the Robinia range. We wanted the play area to flow (like water) and so we designed it in ‘zones’ which mirrors the journey children go on from toddler through to tween age range. The result was a giant Robina ship which acts as a focal point. It has been hand-crafted and painted and features many different elements. The ship allows for huge capacity play, allowing users of all age ranges to play in harmony. KOMPAN were also mindful to ensure the play area was fully inclusive and installed inclusive swings, You & Me swing, low-level play stations, basket swings, spinner bowls, and supernova elements to name just a few.

“I am struggling to write how overwhelmingly pleased I am with KOMPAN and the outcome of this project. The council’s aspiration for the redevelopment of the former lido site was to deliver a 20-year promise of providing wet play, free of charge, whilst still providing a facility which could be used 365 days a year. During our first week of being open, we recorded over 7000 visitors to the park, with many more thousands being turned away. We have even had to create an app to allow for pre-booking systems. Thank you KOMPAN!”

The Inspiration Behind Splashland Playground Design - Nature inspired play

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council didn't just want a playground that was built to last they also wanted the playground equipment to blend with the natural woodland that surrounds the splash park.

There are many benefits of a natural playground. Not only does outdoor natural play equipment look great, it also fits in with many surroundings. This makes it ideal for green spaces and parks that don't want to impact the surrounding landscape. Natural playground equipment can also be used with what is already on the site, complementing the existing environment.
