Queens Market, Denbighshire County Council
Themed play that enhances and complements local family attraction
Queen’s Market is a brand new attraction for the community of Rhyl and holiday visitors to the area. It was created as an area for the whole family, so this play area was designed to ensure that there were free activities and play provision for children whilst their families were eating/drinking and utilising Queen’s Market.
Understanding the customers need for an exciting and efficient solution to complement the indoor offering, we came up with a themed play area to reflect the indoor market. This is how we created the children’s very own role play Café, Shop and Ice Cream Cart. Denbighshire County Council have trust in KOMPANs ability to deliver fantastic themed play projects, on time, on budget and with interesting and different play equipment on every site. We have also recently completed another nearby scheme in Drift Park in Rhyl, so it was important that this site had it’s own identity and allowed users to use both sites independently as they both offer different attractions and types of play.
The feedback has been amazing! The play area is designed with children that have all different levels of ability in mind, ensuring that there are play activities that don’t all require physical strength, but also the option to develop fine and gross motor skills through climbing, crawling and exploring the play features. Playing here develops cognitive skills too with fun games and creative play boards.

“This play space is a great example of collaboration, which ensures that there is another great and inclusive place in Rhyl for children to play all year round, this time at the iconic Queen’s Market venue.”
Graham Boase, Chief Executive of Denbighshire County Council
“This new play area is a real asset, and enhances the already brilliant family offering at the Queen’s Market venue. Inclusive and packed with fun play features, the new play area is directly outside the venue, and adds to the play area offering in the area, with two now situated along the reopened and reimagined prom in Rhyl. The Queen’s Market is a brilliant venue for families, and it is brilliant to see that the construction on this latest addition to the venue is now complete.”

A mini play version of the main attraction
The design proposal included a Role Play Caffi/ Café equipped with its own coffee machine, hob and oven. The children can pretend to serve at the hatch and then take a seat under the striped shelter. This piece also features climbing and a wide steel slide for some dynamic fun and play at height. We also included our lovely Ice Cream Cart, complete with ice cream holders, bench and desk, plus tactile pieces to engage the cognitive functions. For more active users, they can climb our arched net, spin on the Tipi Carousel or join 3 other friends on the 4 way springer. The play area is surrounded by bow top fencing with fun and engaging play panels. The design of the site features red and yellow surfacing to match the Queen’s Market building itself and blends in well with its surroundings.
