Retain and refurbish, while adding new play features to upgrade a destination playground

Tandridge District Council were looking to procure the contract for playground design and refurbishment of 6 sites across the district. KOMPAN were successful bidders for 5 sites of which Holland Park, Mill Lane Rec was one.

The brief was to retain and refurbish as much of the existing equipment as possible, while adding new play features to upgrade the site, as one of Tandridge’s destination playgrounds. We were also required to improve accessibility and build better resilience to wet weather. We managed to fulfil this brief, extending the play area with a new inclusive area, and featuring equipment for all ages and abilities.

We focused the budget on extending the play area to incorporate a ‘wow’ factor accessible Pirate Ship. This has lots of ground level play opportunities, an accessible staircase to the upper level which includes imaginative play for children both able and with limited ability, including those in wheelchairs. Our design proposal also included accessible play items: wheelchair carousel, ocean seesaw, accessible picnic table and an eye-catching 3D wetpour shark head. For the slightly older children we have included the challenging overhead ladder and BLOQX climbing boulders.

As standard, we selected KOMPAN equipment which was made from up to 95% recycled post consumer plastic, fully certified and verified by Bureau Veritas to help Tandridge District Council towards achieving their goal of net zero emissions.

Social value and education on using responsible materials

Following the successful installation of the playground, KOMPAN hosted a grand opening event attended by local school children, nurseries and council representatives. Goody bags, refreshments and raffle prizes were provided by KOMPAN as social value for the project to the delight of the local community. We were also pleased to attend Holland Park Junior School during the construction phase to deliver a whole school assembly on our plans for the playground and how KOMPAN are on a mission to reduce our carbon footprint, utilising responsible materials and practices in our manufacturing.
