Hamsey Green Playground, Tandridge District Council
Enhancing facilities whilst also improving accessibility
Tandridge District Council were looking to procure the contract for playground design and refurbishment of 6 sites across the district. KOMPAN were successful bidders for 5 sites of which Hamsey Green Playground was one. As a small neighbourhood playground, the brief was to add and replace play equipment, enhancing facilities whilst also improving accessibility and building better resilience to wet weather. As one of the main focuses of the refurbishment, we focused the budget initially on improving accessibility around the site, creating a continuous wet pour surface and limiting the need to move across any grassed areas which can become waterlogged in winter.
Our design proposal included some new accessible items, such as a wheelchair carousel and an inclusive seesaw. A new basket swing provides more excitement for children of all ages whilst also offering a more inclusive swinging option. The remaining space within the site and limited budget then led us to include a new double tower multiplay unit with its accessible staircase, catering to children of a larger range of ages and abilities.
Despite challenging access across a large field, we were able to ensure the playground was installed with minimum disruption to the rest of the park and left the site, clean and tidy with the reinstatement of existing turf areas in good condition. We managed to fulfil the brief, completely transforming the surface from bark to wet pour throughout and including new inclusive yet challenging play features.
Following the successful installation of the playground, KOMPAN hosted a grand opening event which was attended by 90 children from Hamsey Green Primary School, local families and council representatives. Goody bags, refreshments and raffle prizes were provided by KOMPAN as social value for the project to the delight of the local community whilst we were also pleased to attend Hamsey Green Primary School to present to children in year 4 and 6 about sustainability. Linking it in with their class topics and helping the school with their ongoing commitment to being an ECO School.
