Greenside Playground, Yarnfield and Cold Meece Parish Council

Transforming an ageing playground into a thriving community asset
Following a competitive tender process, KOMPAN was selected to transform a tired and ageing playground into a vibrant, inclusive destination for the whole community. The existing site required significant investment, with worn safety surfacing, areas of grass interrupting the play space, and several elements offering limited play value while creating ongoing maintenance challenges. The council's vision was to create a more harmonious and sustainable environment that would support children of all abilities, encourage outdoor activity, spark creativity and imagination, and provide opportunities for social interaction across generations. The redesigned space now offers a diverse range of play experiences for pre-school and primary-aged children while also creating a welcoming destination for families, carers and older residents. By incorporating accessible features, natural materials, seating areas and picnic facilities, the project delivers a long-lasting community asset that promotes wellbeing, inclusivity and pride of place for local residents.
The result is a colourful, dynamic and interesting play area, where existing pieces now feel intertwined and matching with the new equipment. It has harmony and a feel of careful thoughtful design throughout. The flow of equipment and surfacing now works seamlessly and is much easier to maintain too.
We also added some additional challenging elements with our Robinia activity trail, extending the existing trail further and redefining the play area space on the green. Imagination and creativity is now central to the playground, with cognitive and physical play opportunities for all.

Making movement play accessible to all
The local community loved the addition of a ground level play house with a multitude of sensory and tactile stimulation for younger and less able users. This is complimented also by supported springing; the solo Ladybird and the group Home seesaw with back, arm and leg supports. We included our inclusive swing seat and the ‘You and Me’ seat to offer elements of high accessibility, including those who often are excluded from these types of movement play.
