Birchmeadow Park, Shropshire Council
Tendering to many playground suppliers, KOMPAN scored top due to the outstanding theming of the site, linking it to the history of the area.
This playground is a refurbishment and improvement to the existing playground. The existing playground was a mixture of equipment that had been installed over the years and was lacking in dynamic and creative play, as well as play that stimulates a large age range of children. We incorporated the maximum level of sensory, tactile, dynamic and modern play types for the community of Broseley.
KOMPAN were given a brief to include as many different opportunities for play, for all types of children. The new playground had endless possibilities as the space available was very large and expansive, so we started from scratch creating a bespoke, unique design proposal for this site. Millie worked closely with Shropshire Council and did in-school design sessions with a local primary school and a local nursery to make tweaks and changes to the design plans with the local children who would be using the playground. The children are the experts after all!
The result was a site that links well to the history of the area: Pipe manufacturing, the nearby Ironbridge and the mining history. This site is hugely inclusive and accessible, encourages physical exploration, cognitive learning and sensory creativity. This allows children to enjoy the play area no matter their age, ability or disability.
This playground has a fantastic new early years play area including different types of swings for inclusivity, a balance trail, and an exciting new sand pit area with sand play features such as buckets and cogs to move the sand around and enjoy messy play.
The junior area now has a big new space net, an inclusive roundabout, and then a risky play and challenging area with climbing BLOQX and the thrilling Cliff Rider!
