Nature Play

The Nature Play range for dense urban estates and waterfront precincts is built around European Robinia hardwood, selected for its natural strength, durability, and distinctive grain. Each structure is individually shaped by designers to create unique play experiences, ensuring no two play systems look or feel the same. From village‑style clusters and ship‑inspired zones to compact play huts and playhouses, Robinia brings character and visual impact to condominium decks, public parks, and commercial environments.

Well-suited to high‑use urban playgrounds, Robinia supports a wide range of applications, including play systems, obstacle courses, and robust spring elements. Its natural qualities allow planners to create landmark play spaces that combine craftsmanship, longevity, and strong placemaking value for contemporary urban developments.

With their warm, nature‑inspired aesthetic and professional‑grade construction, these ranges complement landscaped precincts while delivering reliable performance in shared public settings.

Both ranges offer extensive configuration flexibility, making it easy to adapt layouts, scale, and play features to suit existing site conditions, circulation patterns, and safety requirements. Well-suited to dense urban environments, Northland and Countryside allow planners and developers to create cohesive, character‑rich play zones that integrate smoothly into broader master plans and portfolio standards.

Designing nature-inspired play zones

Nature‑inspired playgrounds create active, social spaces where children can explore, climb, and imagine together in the open air within residential estates and public parks. These play areas soften dense urban environments and transform hard surfaces into welcoming precincts that encourage families to gather and children to play freely.

For more than five decades, KOMPAN has supported planners, developers, and property managers in shaping outdoor play into coherent, well‑organised environments. Using carefully selected natural materials and robust play structures, nature‑inspired playgrounds integrate smoothly into civic plazas, parks, and residential settings, delivering engaging, long‑term play value for children across the community.

Tips for Playground Planning

Nature‑Inspired Playgrounds for Urban Estates and Public Spaces

Nature‑inspired playgrounds provide a thoughtful way to bring children closer to outdoor play within dense urban environments. Using a considered mix of timber, rope, and sculpted metal, these play spaces maintain open sightlines so children and caregivers remain visually connected to the surrounding landscape. The result is a refined play environment that complements high‑quality urban design while encouraging exploration and movement.

For planners and developers, the objective is to create playgrounds that attract families, sustain engagement, and support varied movement within compact footprints. Well‑planned nature playgrounds combine climbing, sliding, swinging, balancing, and social meeting areas into a single, coherent layout, suitable for residential estates, community precincts, and commercial developments.

Inclusive Design for Shared Play

Inclusive play is a core requirement in contemporary playground design. An inclusive nature playground allows children of different abilities to enter, move through, and participate in the same play experiences. Features such as ramps, wide pathways, and accessible surfacing bring children closer to tactile elements like sand, stones, planting, and water features, while play structures are designed with graduated levels of challenge.

Rather than separating users, inclusive nature play encourages shared activities such as spinning, rocking, gliding, and group role play. This supports natural interaction between children of different ages and abilities within a single play zone.

Key Outcomes for Urban Projects

When integrated into a wider estate or park masterplan, inclusive nature playgrounds help to:

  • Encourage longer, more active outdoor play

  • Support coordination, balance, and confident movement

  • Provide a calming alternative to indoor and screen‑based activities

  • Strengthen family use of podium decks, park connectors, and civic spaces

For asset owners, designers, and developers, nature‑inspired playgrounds have become a strategic feature. They enhance liveability, add character to shared outdoor areas, and help differentiate residential and mixed‑use developments through meaningful, high‑quality play experiences.

Learn More About the Materials We Use

Robinia is the tree that gives everything. From replenishing the soil with nitrogen, to burning like coal, to providing the source for an exceptional honey, to being one of the most dense and versatile timbers. A native of eastern USA, where it is called black locust, it was introduced to Europe by the king of France’s gardener in 1602. That tree still stands in Square Viviani in central Paris. The tree can now be found growing around the world. In Europe it is most prolific in Germany, Romania and the Czech Republic. It is the wood of choice for KOMPAN because it brings strength, durability and individuality to each design.

The answer in KOMPAN terms is neither – with proper care they both should last a playing ‘lifetime’. Robinia wood has a 15-year warranty. If there is one difference the man-made Ecocore™ has a lifetime guarantee, it looks as good on day one as day 10,000, wood on the other hand matures and can often seem more welcoming with age.

A caring eye is foremost. Being part of nature at KOMPAN we let nature take its course. Most often this adds ‘character’ – the grain and knotting of wood are part of the attraction - but where the natural development might threaten structural safety, the warranty comes into effect.
