William Murdoch Primary School, EYFS Play Area
Outdoor classroom learning through play
William Murdoch Primary School contacted KOMPAN to refurbish their EYFS . The previous early years outdoor play equipment had quite a steep gradient with tired nursery play equipment, with some pieces being completely out of use. KOMPAN had installed the play area at another school nearby and so we were recommended as a supplier.
It was important for the new play area to have clear zones of play, including sand and water play, creative play, physical development and understanding the world through construction and messy play. The aim was to be able to take out smaller focus groups of children to each play zone at the same time and accommodate a large number of users at once.
The new play area required full surfacing so it could be used all-year round as well as additional storage sheds for equipment.
The area was levelled out and fully surfaced providing a more useable area suitable for all-year round use. The various zones feature different types of surfacing (rubber mulch or grass carpet) and different colours so they are easily identifiable.
The feedback from the school has been fantastic from both the teachers and pupils who all love their new play area!

Creating clear zoned areas of play
There is a sand and water play zone sheltered by a lean-to canopy, a construction zone covered by a Robinia sunshade, and a role play zone with a cycle track. There is also a mound and tunnel, a mud play zone with mud kitchens and digging planters as well as physical development with a large 4-tower multiplay unit and a challenging Robinia trim trail.
