Sperrinview Special School

Sperrinview Special School is an Additional Support Needs school catering to older children and young people aged 11–19. The school supports a wide range of needs and places a strong emphasis on creating environments that promote independence, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.

As part of a major expansion project, Sperrinview received a new school building to accommodate its growing pupil population. Having witnessed the transformative impact that high‑quality playground equipment had on pupils at the Dungannon campus, the principal requested that a dedicated outdoor playground space be incorporated into the new grounds. The goal was to ensure that the new site offered the same opportunities for movement, regulation, and social interaction.

Working through the Education Authority, the principal approached KOMPAN with a clear vision for the new school playground equipment. The school required, playground equipment with height to challenge older pupils seeking more adventurous play. Wheelchair‑accessible and inclusive equipment to ensure every child could participate.

KOMPAN designed an inclusive playground that combined challenge, accessibility, and fun. Featuring our Double Mega Deck, which offers significant height, connected by tunnels and bridges. It also has interactive ground level elements for pupils who cannot climb. A ramped unit with slide, enabling wheelchair users with strong upper‑body mobility to access and go down the slide. A wheelchair‑accessible trampoline, encouraging shared play between wheelchair users and peers.

The new playground has quickly become an essential part of daily life at Sperrinview. Teachers and support staff have mentioned the pupils are more prepared and settled for their work because they have burnt off that excess energy and they have noticed strengthened peer relationships. They have also noted the peace of mind that comes from knowing pupils are using school playground equipment designed with safety, inclusivity, and durability in mind.
