A playground with a bespoke centrepiece play unit to give a real ‘WOW’ factor.
The previous tired and out of date play area needed replacing! South Derbyshire Council got feedback from the local community which helped to set a design brief. This would include a large one-off centrepiece play unit to give a real ‘WOW’ factor.
With this in mind we worked closely with our design team to create a huge bespoke Pirate Ship with the Cliff Rider linking it to the themed Castle section which creates the requested standout centrepiece. Surrounded by other exciting and challenging play items such as swings frames with a wide range of swing seats catering for all ages and abilities. Also included are a cableway, jumper trampoline, ocean themed seesaw, an inclusive roundabout, a supernova.
For the toddler area we used a blue and white colour scheme to represent the Cornishware pottery that used to be made locally nearby in Swadlincote.
“It was a great feeling to see the total transformation and look on the children’s faces as they went on the pirate ship and all the new equipment. We are sitting in a ward with a very high obese rate for children as they were not active. They are now very active on a great play area. Three words to describe this play area are ‘adventurous’, ‘fun’ and ‘transformational’. Even now, on a Monday morning there are parents bringing their children to play on the play equipment which you would not have seen before. My favourite bit has to be the pirate ship. I’ve climbed on it, it’s great!”

Positive Feedback
Since its opening the feedback has been amazing and the visitor numbers have increased so much so that the council have now installed a permanent ice cream and refreshments stand adjacent to the play area. Overall, this has been a really successful and fun project to be involved in!
