The popular Aston-cum-Aughton playing field site is used by many different ages and abilities. This encompasses toddlers, juniors and younger teens. The parish council got in touch based on a recommendation from a Parish Council Clerk Facebook Group after having never previously worked with KOMPAN.
Our design proposal included a wide range of equipment to meet many ages and abilities. Inclusivity and accessibility was considered throughout with many accessible, sensory and dynamic elements. Existing pathways ensured good access throughout the area.
A key piece of equipment was a new cableway replacing the previous one which had been out of action for some time. Other exciting elements such as a nest swing for both age groups, wheelchair accessible roundabout, large rotating net and new junior multi-play units provided something for everyone!
Equipment was selected based on both play value and durability. Steel structures were used throughout to provide the longest possible life to the equipment on site. Colour coding the areas between toddler and junior allowed us to make the area colourful whilst complementing the natural green surroundings of the space. Enhancing play value and user capacity whilst replacing all existing items of equipment was key. We wanted to improve the provision rather than simply replace.
One of the main focuses of this project was inclusivity. KOMPAN didn’t need to change the approach as we always approach spaces with inclusivity in mind. We selected some key inclusive items and focused on integrating them within the space so users of all abilities could play together without barriers.
The client was so happy with the scheme and the community impact that we undertook a second project on their behalf months after the completion of Lodge Lane.

KOMPAN attended the site opening where local primary schoolchildren of many ages were in attendance. The children swarmed the area and commented on how much fun everything was. Since the opening, there has been very little anti-social behaviour on the park and there has been an increased interest and use in the space.
