Northumberland Council identified Cleaswell play area as a priority for investment, recognising it had reached the end of its life after years of wear and tear, with much of the equipment removed for safety reasons and leaving little play value remaining. Northumberland Council issued a competitive tender to breathe new life into the space and provide the community with a safe, engaging play environment once again.
With a large area to work with but a limited budget, KOMPAN delivered a creative solution that maximised both space and play value. The design centred around the iconic , providing not only a striking focal point visible from the adjacent road however it is packed full of play value. This bouncy play structure encourages children to climb to the top. The feeling of achievement when having climbed to the top is phenomenal, making it a challenge for children to tackle again and again.

It was vital to enhance the visual appeal and connectivity of the site, with bright thermoplastic markings which were incorporated to link different play zones. Recognising the close proximity of a special needs school, the design prioritised with: Wheelchair-accessible routes, sensory play elements and carefully selected colours to assist visually impaired users in navigating the space.
The completed site is now a vibrant, welcoming space full of colour and excitement. The new equipment offers challenge and fun for children of all ages and abilities, transforming the playground to a bright, engaging space that brings everyone together.
