From early learning vision to a community playground

The project is part of a new-build development promoted by the local municipality, with the ambition to overcome the traditional separation between school, public space and community life. The goal was to create an open educational ecosystem where play, learning and social interaction naturally coexist, and where access is guaranteed to all children regardless of their economic or social background.

Within the large public garden in front of the nursery, “The Pirates’ Bay” was created: an inclusive, adventure-themed playground that acts as a natural extension of the school’s learning spaces. From the outset, the client’s brief was clear: with a defined budget and area, the municipality wanted a high-quality play space for children combined with a dedicated area where parents could meet, wait for their children and exercise.

Ground‑level activities and accessible routes enable all children to participate, turning every outdoor session into a meaningful learning experience.

An inclusive play and fitness space for all ages

The result is an inclusive playground developed according to universal design principles. Robinia wood structures, adventure trails and multisensory play elements stimulate balance, coordination, strength and imagination, while symbolic play areas foster cooperation and social skills. Ground level activities and accessible routes enable all children to participate, turning every outdoor session into a meaningful learning experience.

Next to the playground, an outdoor fitness area for teenagers and adults makes the space truly intergenerational and encourages interaction among families and local residents. The area has quickly become a community hub, and weekly public classes are held every Friday. Due to the high level of use, the municipality is already planning an expansion, adding more strength equipment, a large combi unit and a dedicated space for stretching and yoga.
