Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Opened in April 2025, this custom-designed playground introduces a new dimension of play to Gardens by the Bay. With imaginative themes, it sparks curiosity and inspires storytelling among children. Natural play elements such as sand and organic Robinia wood enrich the experience, inviting all visitors to reconnect with nature.

The KOMPAN design team collaborated closely with the client, carefully analysing every detail and reviewing the design from multiple perspectives. Beyond safe and engaging play, considerations such as shading, lighting, and integration with the landscape were essential. Every custom feature was meticulously fine-tuned to balance functionality with the aesthetic vision of the client.

The playground offers a variety of activities and graduated challenges to keep children engaged in play. At its heart stand the 9 metre-tall play towers — striking centrepieces that foster physical, social, and imaginative play. Their exteriors are wrapped with vertical wooden fins, creating an architectural rhythm that softens the steel structure with a warm, natural touch.

A large sand play area provides rich sensory experiences, especially for younger children. Beside it, themed play zones feature unique structures inspired by everyday life — from a lively market with fruits and vegetables to colourful kueh (desserts commonly found in Southeast Asia) and even a picture-book library. These playful settings encourage dramatic play, supporting language development, social interaction, and overall well-being.

Ambient lighting enhances its playfulness and inviting atmosphere after sunset, ensuring the space remains open and welcoming.
