Abbey Leisure Centre, United Kingdom

Outdoor gym area for the community
who could not afford a gym membership, Cambridge City Council commissioned KOMPAN to create a free to use outdoor gym. Filled with a range of calisthenics equipment, cardio exercise bikes, as well as innovative outdoor strength machines. The brief was:
To create a fitness site that offered something different from traditional outdoor gym products.
To install high-quality equipment that was robust, low-maintenance, and would withstand vandalism.
To provide outdoor fitness equipment that appealed to a variety of demographics.

"The community feedback has been great, with such a wide range of people using the equipment. We have groups of teenagers, adults, female-only boot camp classes, our mental health service users, and also the Exercise Referral Scheme running sessions for their members. Park Run also uses it for warm-ups"
Julie Durrant,
Recreation Technical Officer, Cambridge City Council

Because the facility is completely free to use, it provides an inclusive alternative to traditional gyms, helping remove financial barriers to exercise. From the adjustable City Bike to cross-training favourites such as Magnetic Bells, Suspension Trainer, Parallel Bars, and Bootcamp Base, users can enjoy a full-body workout in the fresh air.
The success of the project was clear from the start. Demand for the facility was so strong that Cambridge City Council returned to KOMPAN to expand the gym, allowing even more people to benefit from free outdoor fitness opportunities.
