Outdoor Fitness

Re-thinking, reflecting, refreshing

Most of the great sports of the world, soccer, tennis, golf, rugby, athletics, rely on one common platform; being played outdoors. It’s not just the space, it is the atmosphere they are played in. Fresh air is an invaluable asset in making the body perform better, the natural partner to exercise and feeling good.

With dedication you get fit in a gym, but, bottled-up inside, you miss the extra challenge and stimulation of nature. The sun on your back, the breeze on your face, even the refreshing drop of rain, turns vigour into invigorating. We talk about the benefits of clean mountain air, the bracing sea breeze, and then used to deride the quality of inner-city air. Environmental awareness has put a filter into urban life opening up the opportunities of sport and exercise literally on our doorsteps.

KOMPAN’s range of outdoor fitness equipment is the result of conjunctive research between a team of in-house fitness experts and the University of Southern Denmark. They have taken their observations, studies and recommendations to engineers who have responded with the first series of equipment that performs to the level of indoor equipment, outdoors. All products are supported by the KOMPAN Sports and Fitness app which helps guide, mentor and measure performance.

From being physically and mentally sharper, there are numerous reasons for exercising out in the open. Fresh air increases the flow of oxygen improving blood pressure and heart rate, it also makes the digestive system more efficient and aids dieting.  Being outside makes you more active and attentive even when you return indoors. Ask schoolteachers how much easier it is to conduct a class after a recess.  More oxygen results in increased brain performance, improves concentration skills and provides more energy. In addition, being outside on a good day will also help you produce vitamin D from the sun. We talk of cheerful people as having a ‘sunny disposition’. The amount of vitamin D you need is dependent on many factors, time of day, geographical position, skin colour, age and even whether or not you apply protection. The recommended amount is between 10-30 minutes of unprotected midday sun several times a week.

On straight health improvement, oxygen helps white blood cells do their job by fighting bacteria and germs and by dilating your lungs, helps clean them. Then there is happiness. Endorphin levels shoot up when we are out in the open. An American study indicated that stress levels were reduced in 71% by simple walking in nature whilst they increased by a similar percentage when people walked the same distance indoors.
