Robinia Springers

Art on the edge of nature

Dolphins and bugs, ants and bees, mules and ponies, the Robinia Springers take creatures from nature and craft them into an artful, wooden play format. The Springer is a KOMPAN invention, an icon in the playground and with Robinia, it becomes a three-dimensional attraction. Apart from modelling insects, animals and mammals, the warmth and tactility of Robinia translates wonderfully into other favourites adding a new chapter in the Springer story.

The Springer is a ‘go-to’ feature when placed in any playground. Children rapidly seize the opportunity of a rocking few minutes in between enjoying the other features. The Robinia Springers fall into two categories, those based on creatures which are largely solo experiences, and the springer version of the seesaw. Both encourage the children to share, one in taking turns and the other in cooperation.

Springers are amongst the most popular of play features, but even when ‘inactive’ the sculpture-like quality of the bugs and beasts brings a sense of occupancy to the playground. KOMPAN started as art that children climbed upon, now with the dolphin and its friends it has turned full-circle.

The combination of natural Robinia and ropes allows the sense of being close to nature, in fact being placed on the edge of woodland is a particularly popular location.

The Robinia tree is a triumph of nature. As a tree, at every level it performs. It grows in poor soils, it feeds nitrogen into the earth encouraging other plants, it flowers to be the source of Acadia honey, its leaves breathe out Co2. It adapts well in urban areas, gracing many boulevards and streets. When cut as timber, the stump regenerates and grows back quickly. It is highly sustainable. The timber is fine-grained, strong and durable - the perfect material for play features.

Another plus aspect that displays itself with Robinia is that it dictates how it is used. Each piece is unique, bringing a degree of individuality to every bee, mule or bug.
