Robinia Play, Act and Learn

Classrooms without walls, learning without boundaries

The Robinia Play, Act & Learn series is the KOMPAN approach to sensory, ground-based play for the youngest children as they move towards school. The concept takes teaching stalwarts, the blackboard, music, theatre and places them outdoors, creating a fresh-air classroom, wrapped in the welcoming tactile quality of Robinia. As a platform for pre-school development it introduces the concept of formal learning in an informal way. For the young playmates, from day one, learning is associated with fun.

Life is a series of transitions, the Robinia Play, Act & Learn, enables one of the earliest, the giant step from toddler to young child. It is ultimate play starter, the ticket a sensory and creative world of play with activities to stimulate their cognitive creative and social skills. A child’s first experience of formal learning need not be tied to a desk.

In the classroom without walls, many children can participate at the same time, the only limit being in the available number of pole seats, and even then, extra chairs can be added. With drums, music panels and theatre central to the development of the young mind, the environment encourages role-play and stimulates imagination. The Robinia is crafted into an inviting cottage that becomes the focal point for getting dressed-up and performing on the small stage. There’s even a dress-up wall with a mirror to prepare for the show! The blackboard invites children to practice fine motor skills by drawing or maybe practice writing their first letter or word.

The Robinia tree itself is a triumph of nature. As a tree, at every level it performs. It grows in poor soils, it feeds nitrogen into the earth encouraging other plants, it flowers to be the source of Acadia honey, its leaves breathe out Co2. It adapts well in urban areas, gracing many boulevards and streets. When cut as timber, the stump regenerates and grows back quickly. It is highly sustainable. The timber is fine-grained, strong and resilient; it naturally repels fungi and bugs - the perfect material for long-lasting play features.

How do we get started?

Finding the right products from the extensive range is the starting point. We encourage you to click and to be inspired by the amazing playgrounds we have installed around the world. Our very competent and experienced support team can then help you translate your wish list into your unique outdoor solution. Feel free to contact us and ask all your questions, or to receive a quote.

What preservation does the wood need?

Robinia as a tight grained hardwood has a natural quality that resists rot and pests. KOMPAN Robinia, from the day of installation, has an industry-leading 15-year warranty.

How many can participate at the same time?

That’s the beauty of theatre, there are players and there is an audience. To put a figure on it is difficult because the configuration varies, but it is about the children feeling comfortable and at this stage perhaps a dozen or so young faces carrying out four or five activities maintains the balance.

So, is it a classroom or a playground?

In truth both, and perhaps more. As with all freestanding equipment the opportunity is there for individual taste and preferences so that the feature reflects precise needs.
