As a responsible outdoor playground and fitness site manufacturer, we recognise an important truth: hardly any product or playground manufacturer can genuinely claim to be fully sustainable. Sustainability is not a fixed label; it is a complex, evolving ambition that spans an entire value chain.
Every product relies on resources, energy and logistics that leave an environmental footprint somewhere, whether through raw material extraction, transportation, manufacturing, use or end‑of‑life treatment. Even the most carefully designed products involve trade‑offs between durability, safety, performance and environmental impact.
True sustainability requires a full life‑cycle perspective, and that level of transparency is difficult to achieve in global supply chains. Materials may be responsibly sourced, but processing them still requires energy. Products may be designed to last decades, yet their production can never be completely free of emissions or waste.
Add to this the fact that sustainability criteria are constantly evolving, driven by science, regulation and societal expectations. And it becomes clear why absolute claims are problematic. What was considered sustainable a decade ago may no longer meet today’s standards.
That is why we choose progress over perfection. Instead of declaring our products “sustainable”, we focus on improving sustainability, measurably and continuously. We reduce impact where possible, design for longevity and repair, choose better materials and document our decisions transparently.
In a world where no product is impact‑free, honest communication and continuous improvement are the most sustainable choices we can make, for playgrounds, for communities and for future generations.

We are fighting the climate change by documented reduction in carbon footprint, recycled content and end-of-life recyclability
Playgrounds are more than just a place for children to play, learn and develop their skills. Behind the swings and slides lies the reality that playgrounds have a deep environmental footprint. From the moment the raw materials are extracted to the time when the play equipment needs to be disposed of, each phase of a playground’s life cycle poses a potential challenge to our environment.
In our efforts to fight climate change, we chose the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to help us identify what matters and where we can focus our efforts on areas with significant impact on reducing our carbon footprint. We found that approximately 80% of our carbon emissions were from the raw materials used in our production of playground and fitness equipment. We have a responsibility to reduce that number. Therefore, we continuously work to reduce our usage of raw materials by replacing them and instead using recycled or natural materials that emit fewer carbon emissions.
We are well on our way. Since 2024, our playground components have been made from up to more than 95% post-consumer recycled waste materials in all colours as the standard*.

Decks and steps
All our equipment decks are supported by uniquely designed low-carbon aluminium profiles with multiple attachment options, increasing their strength. Our grey-coloured moulded decks and steps are made from 75% post-consumer recycled polypropylene material with a non-skid pattern and textured surface.
Tempered Corocord™ rope with CircularYarn
Ropes come with galvanised six-stranded steel wires and a steel core, impossible to wear through. Each strand is tightly wrapped with CircularYarn in >95% post-consumer recycled material, which is melted onto each individual strand, making the ropes highly wear and vandalism-resistant.
Galvanised steel
Our steel surfaces and steel frames are hot-dip galvanised inside and outside with lead-free zinc. The galvanisation has excellent corrosion resistance in outside environments and is maintenance-free.
Roto-moulded items (e.g. slides and seats)
Our moulded plastic items are made from 33% post-consumer recycled material in all colours. The teal-coloured items are made from recycled fishing nets from the maritime industry. All items are moulded in one piece, providing strength and minimising weakness caused by joints.
Robinia wood
Robinia wood is a very strong and long-lasting material with a very high level of natural oils. Thus robinia wood makes durable playgrounds which are close to maintenance free and able to last for many years. KOMPAN robinia products can come with FSC®-certification (FSC C004450).

Main posts are available in five different materials.
1. Impregnated pine wood with an in-ground steel footing.
2. Galvanised steel with powder-coated top finish.
3. Colour-anodised lead-free aluminium, made from low-carbon aluminium.
4. TexMade™ posts are made from >95% postconsumer recycled textile and plastic waste.
5. Low-carbon pre-galvanised steel posts made from 80% post-consumer recycled material.
CircularHDPE -panelen
Nu in alle kleuren
Vanaf 2024 zijn CircularHDPE-panelen verkrijgbaar in verschillende tinten die afkomstig zijn van zorgvuldig geselecteerde, gerecyclede materialen. Elke tint ademt duurzaamheid en bewijst dat gerecycled afval naadloos in elk ontwerp kan worden verwerkt, zonder dat dit ten koste gaat van de esthetiek.
Het paneel in de kleur blauwgroen is gemaakt van gerecycled post-consumer oceaanafval uit de maritieme industrie, zoals visnetten, touwen en sleepnetten. Alle andere kleuren zijn gemaakt van post-consumer huishoudelijk afval. Het gebruik van CircularHDPE-panelen, gemaakt van >95% post-consumer gerecycled afval, in plaats van panelen gemaakt van nieuw plastic, verlaagt de CO2-uitstoot met 82% CO2e/kg.

De voetafdruk van een speeltuin
Speeltuinen zijn een essentieel onderdeel van de ontwikkeling van kinderen, maar laten vaak een aanzienlijke voetafdruk achter. Vanaf het moment van grondstofwinning, tot het moment van verwijdering. Dorthe Thorup-Kjærulff, Go Green Director bij KOMPAN, belicht KOMPANs inzet voor transparantie.
De nieuwe look van verhoogde duurzaamheid
Architect Alexander Sundberg garandeert dat TexMade™ staanders en kunststof alternatieven, gemaakt van textielafval en post-consumer materialen, net zo duurzaam zijn als staal en kunststof. Speeloplossingen zijn net zo kleurrijk zijn als u maar wenst - maar hebben een drastisch lagere koolstofvoetafdruk.
Groenere speeltuinen: Waar duurzaamheid en veiligheid elkaar ontmoeten
Extreme tests bewijzen dat KOMPAN's TexMade™ staanders, volledig gemaakt van textielafval, zeer robuust zijn. Jacob Harder, ingenieur bij KOMPAN, benadrukt de noodzaak om alternatieven te vinden voor traditionele materialen zoals staal en kunststof.
Speelplaatsen met gedocumenteerde groene voordelen
Bedrijven maken steeds vaker gebruik van onafhankelijke derde partijen om hun groene claims te verifiëren en onderbouwen. Tomas Riegels-Jørgensen van Bureau Veritas benadrukt de toenemende vraag naar inzicht in ESG-activiteiten. De afkorting ESG staat voor Environmental (Milieu), Social (Sociaal) en Governance (Bestuur).
Vragen en antwoorden over producten
Made Green betekent dat producten tot 95% uit post-consumer gerecyclede materialen bestaan, zoals oceaanafval, gebruikt textiel, voedselverpakkingsafval, gebruikte plastic zakken, etc. Onze Made Green producten hebben ongeveer 50% minder koolstofuitstoot dan vergelijkbare traditionele producten gemaakt van nieuwe bronnen (afhankelijk van het product).
Born Green betekent dat producten worden gemaakt van natuurlijk hardhout zoals Robinia. Robinia is zeer duurzaam en heeft geen chemische houtverduurzamingsmiddelen nodig. KOMPAN Robinia producten zijn ook verkrijgbaar met een FSC® certificering (C004450).
Ja, we hebben een uitgebreid groen assortiment gelanceerd in ons MADE GREEN universum. Er zijn producten voor verschillende leeftijdsgroepen en activiteiten. Ons BORN GREEN assortiment is ook erg uitgebreid en omvat producten voor verschillende leeftijdsgroepen en activiteiten.
Ja, we stellen zeer hoge eisen aan onze kwaliteit; we stellen dezelfde hoge eisen aan ons nieuwe groene assortiment.

We maken het mogelijk om te kiezen, maar we werken er ook aan om al onze producten duurzamer te maken. Dit gaat tijd kosten vanwege ons enorme assortiment - maar het gaat ons lukken.
Alle MADE GREEN producten zijn gemaakt van post-consumer afval. Het kost meer tijd om post-consumer afval te verzamelen. Je moet het afval innemen, schoonmaken en sorteren voordat het opnieuw kan worden gebruikt. Het is dus iets duurder, maar het bespaart veel CO2e.
Ja, al onze producten gemaakt van gerecyclede post-consumer materialen, kunnen opnieuw worden gebruikt. Ze kunnen gedemonteerd, verzameld, gesorteerd en opnieuw gebruikt worden.
Bijna al onze producten kunnen opnieuw worden gerecycled. Onze producten zijn demontabel. Daardoor is het mogelijk om grondstoffen te sorteren - in bijv. plastic, staal, aluminium - te verzamelen en her te gebruiken. Sommige grondstoffen zijn niet geschikt voor recycling. Alle houtsoorten worden beschouwd als niet-recyclebaar. HPL, WPC en touw zijn niet recyclebaar.
Ja, u kunt bijvoorbeeld een HPL-vloer uit ons MOMENTS-speelsysteem vervangen door een gegoten vloer, waarin post-consumer gerecycled oceaanafval is verwerkt. Het is ook mogelijk om HDPE panelen te vervangen door panelen die gemaakt zijn van post-consumer gerecyled oceaanafval.
