Shadow Forest Elementary

In Spring 2022, residents of Humble, Texas, approved a $775-million bond proposal to fund facility improvements and technological enhancements for their rapidly expanding town, just 20 miles outside Houston. Understanding that learning through movement is equally important as the lessons in the classroom, the Humble Independent School District (ISD) plans to bring themed play to all its elementary schools and outdoor fitness sites to its middle schools.

Giving each school playground a unique, original theme was a major pillar of the district's project, and "Ice Castle" was chosen for the Timbers Elementary campus. By working with KOMPAN and the KOMPAN Design Studio, students can escape into the fictional world of the Yeti, its frozen landscape, and the legendary ice castle.

At the heart of the play area stands a 31-foot-tall ice-castle Giant XL play tower, rising from the frozen mountain kingdom and inviting students to climb, explore, and imagine themselves deep in the legendary world of the Yeti. The custom-themed structure features two slides, tactile play panels, and a climbing net and wall, while the Cliff Rider adds a thrilling pendulum experience that brings even more adventure to the ascent and descent.

The playground is set on accessible pour-in-place rubber surfacing designed with snowflakes, wisps of ice magic, trees, and the mountain village below, reinforcing the immersive winter theme throughout the space. Additional features include a Double Zipline and the Yeti Trail climbing net with custom Yeti climbing panels, along with the Ice Cave Climbing Rope Tunnel accented by custom icicle and snowy top panels. The custom frozen BLOQX structures continue the climbing fun with scalable challenges.

A snow-capped swing set with ADA-accessible seating, a Snowman Seesaw, Snowflake Jumping Net, spinners, springers, rubber pour-in-place ice cubes and balls, a Turbo Carousel, and a themed communication board sign provide a wide variety of play opportunities for children of all abilities. Together, these elements create a highly imaginative destination where students can climb, swing, spin, and explore in a one-of-a-kind frozen fantasy landscape.
