Bear Branch Elementary

In Spring 2022, residents of Humble, Texas, approved a $775-million bond proposal to fund facility improvements and technological enhancements for their rapidly expanding town, just 20 miles outside Houston. Understanding that learning through movement is equally important as the lessons in the classroom, the Humble Independent School District (ISD) plans to bring themed play to all its elementary schools and outdoor fitness sites to its middle schools.

Giving each school playground a unique, original theme was a major pillar of the district's project, and "America the Beautiful" was chosen for the Bear Branch Elementary campus. By working with KOMPAN and the KOMPAN Design Studio, the lyrics of the patriotic song burst to life in a dazzling display of immersive play features.

The playground features a 29-foot-tall patriotic play tower with a 20-foot-tall slide and bald eagle perched above. A Double Zipline lets students soar into the “spacious skies,” with a military flyover designed into the ADA-accessible poured-in-place (PIP) surfacing. The “fruited plain” features four styles of swing seats on a swing set adorned with “amber waves of grain.” Children can summit the “purple mountains majesties” after trekking through the “alabaster city” multi-tower cityscape play structure. Next to the Statue of Liberty is the Cliff Rider, challenging students to swing from one side to the other. A “shining sea” Sensory Dome delights children with climbing and optical panels, rollers, and more sensory play options. A Universal Carousel invites students to enjoy spinning thrills together, and more spinning and rocking play equipment can be found throughout the playground.
