Room for everybody to be active and social
Activating New York City with innovative outdoor fitness
On the lower east side of Manhattan, in New York City, the community of Stuyvesant Town yearned to meet the needs of college students, working parents, and retirees who desired a way to be active and bring the community together.
Stuytown transformed an old, run-down asphalt lot into a modern outdoor fitness space for residents of all ages and activity levels to enjoy. What was once an outdated lot used for roller hockey, has now been entirely renovated into a modern and innovative space for the entire community to enjoy.
Consistent exercise requires dedication that can be difficult to achieve with a boring gym and monotonous activities. Something is missing from the natural formula for increasing endorphins, burning fat, and building muscles—fresh air and nature! The sun on your back, a light breeze on your face, or even the refreshing drop of rain on your cheek can turn vigor into invigorating.
But don't take our word for it. Listen to the StuyTown residents!
Designed to modernize the community
Stuytown Fitness Playgrounds combines new, innovative equipment with the most popular fitness activities to create an exciting outdoor activity space that can motivate and challenge people of all ages and ability levels.
The space is designed with four zones, each focusing on a specific activity with either high or low intensity. A 1/12th mile loop surrounding the four zones completes the activity space and provides ample space for walking or running at your own pace.
StuyTown is an oasis, a small village in the middle of New York City that combines a neighborhood feel with modern, urban amenities. When the residents asked for an outdoor workout space, the management team knew they had to provide something that was both visually appealing and functional for a wide range of users since recreational amenities are critical for the well-being of the residents. The fitness playground fits in perfectly by being universal and relevant for all demographics.

This unique type of outdoor fitness site has numerous possibilities for having fun and being active! People can train for an obstacle course sport, gymnastics, or general fitness. The equipment combines simplicity with high functionality, so it is both intuitive and challenging for all workout levels. Diagrams placed on the equipment help guide first-time users, or for the more tech-savvy residents, the Kompan Sport and Fitness app will walk you through your workout step by step.
The idea behind the fitness playground was to bring together as many equipment combinations as possible in a fairly contained space to maximize the functionality for a wide variety of users. The stationary bicycles and other traditional gym equipment are now combined with new and innovative solutions that have opened residents to a better social work out environment.
In this video, you will learn more about the design from the architect behind it, Gail Wittwer-Laird, Landscape Architect at Starr Whitehouse.
Outdoor fitness equipment has been around for a long time, but it’s not organized or designed in a way like we have done here.
