Robinia Castles

Knights of play, days of fun

There are seven Robinia Castles, brilliant shapes with fantastic play prospects, but you can’t have one that’s in the current brochure. That’s because each Robinia Castle is wonderfully unique. They are all built to a solid established plan but, because the grain of the Robinia determines shape, each castle has its own individuality and character.

Constructing them is like bespoke tailoring. They come in small, medium and large, with the additional option of a tall version in each size. There’s also an XL, which is already impressively tall. They are all crammed with adventure opportunities for the young princesses and princes who want to explore the nooks and crannies, chase dragons, rescue maidens in distress. Playing side-by-side in an imaginative world helps children develop both social and cognitive creative skills. It is a life-sized fairy-tale where the play is very real.

Amongst the more complex of structures, the castles take nearly 70 hours of installation time, for the smallest, and perhaps an extra hundred hours to erect the XL. Once in place and with due care they will last for a lifetime. Robinia wood is a hardwood and particularly durable. All wood however changes as it dries out or is exposed to the nature that it just left. This adds character to the structure, but should it raise a safety issue then remedial measures can easily be taken.

The Robinia tree is a triumph of nature. As a tree, at every level it performs. It grows in poor soils, it feeds nitrogen into the earth encouraging other plants, it flowers to be the source of Acadia honey, its leaves breathe out Co2. It adapts well in urban areas, gracing many boulevards and streets. When cut as timber, the stump regenerates and grows back quickly. It is highly sustainable. The timber is fine-grained, strong and durable - the perfect material for play features.

Another aspect that displays itself with Robinia is that it dictates how it is used. Each piece is unique and this brings a degree of individuality to every castle.

How do we get started?

Finding the right products from the extensive range is the starting point. We encourage you to click and to be inspired by the amazing playgrounds we have installed around the world. Our very competent and experienced support team can then help you translate your wish list into your unique outdoor solution. Feel free to contact us and ask all your questions or to receive a quote.

What’s the target age group for the castles?

The castles are for six-year olds and upwards. We’ve noticed at KOMPAN that with the popularity of animation cartoons, children reluctantly say goodbye to castle play only when their growing bodies make movements inside awkward.

Is using Robinia wood environmentally friendly?

Yes. We source our Robinia from the sustainable forests of Europe. Robinia is a particularly eco-friendly tree. A deciduous hardwood it grows in poor soil and as it does it puts nitrogen back into the earth, can control erosion, is the source of acacia honey, is a good firewood, is pollution tolerant, so good in urban areas, and when cut grows back quickly from its stump. How friendly is that?

Can the Castles be designed in more accessible versions?

KOMPAN offers a ramp system that can be tailored to solve any request. Ramps provide access to elevated activities for children of all abilities and further it provides an enlarged number of ground level accessible play activities.
