Springers

It’s all rock and roll

They called it crazy, but it was anything but mad. The Crazy Hen, a KOMPAN invention, started a playground revolution. Like many great ideas, the springer system is incredibly simple. A single ultra-strong flexible steel coil, securely held in a sunken foundation, has been the inspiration for a universal playground classic. Frequently copied, never bettered.

The child always has control of the spring, but whether it houses a Kangaroo, a Bobcat or a Scooter, it is an adventure, developing independence and a chance to show ‘what I can do.’ It’s not all solo fun, on the Water Lilies, there’s room for three friends, and the challenge of competitive sharing.

From the Crazy Hen in the 1970’s the springer family hasn’t stopped growing, there are now over 30 variations on the common theme, rock and roll fun.

In planning a playground, the Springer is the most versatile of features. It fits in just about anywhere, the only decision is in which direction should it sit, for reassurance do you want it to face the bench that mum and dad might be on, or inwards towards the other features showing all the play possibilities.

Outdoor play is amongst the best and most valuable forms of development activity. The events of 2020 have underlined just what it means to be without it. If there are any positives from the global lockdown it is in the realisation of what it means to get out and enjoy life and the importance of fresh air in terms of basic health.

FAQ

Who invented the Springer?

The Springer was the brainchild of artist and sculptor Tom Lindhardt. In 1970 it was one of the first products from KOMPAN, the company born out of his observation that children are drawn to colour and objects of size and interest. The Crazy Hen was the first and has become an icon. Today there are 31 products based on the single spring principle.

Is the Springer just for solo use?

The Crazy Hen was created for solo use, but the Springer family has grown to include a number of double occupancy features and even three that can have four children playing at the same time.

How strong is the spring?

KOMPAN springs are engineered to make the movement of the seesaws optimal for many users. The unique designed PA6 brackets fixated with stainless steel hardware ensures high safety while playing. The springs are cleaned, primed and powder-coated for high durability in any environment around the world.
