KOMPAN's opposition to square and conventional play thinking is based upon the founder Tom Lindhart's philosophy:
“I want to be a round detail in a square world”.
The beginning The company began in 1970, when the young artist named Tom Lindhardt witnessed an event that made him want to change the world of children’s play. One of his large, bright sculptures had been placed in a new housing estate to add colour to the otherwise drab surroundings. Realising that children were more interested in playing on it than admiring it, he began working on a dedicated, child-focused play equipment company.
Together with co-founder Hans Mogens Frederiksen he turned KOMPAN into an international company, continuously developing products based on the artistic philosophy.
The KOMPAN philosophy
At KOMPAN we believe that every human is unique and has a right to play. Play is about life. A better life. We call it 'Playful Living' and as you can se from our logo, Homo Ludens (Latin for ‘the playful human being’), it lies at the very soul of our company.
Playful Living expresses: - The importance of play for all
- Our commitment to children’s right to play
- Our belief that every human being is unique and valuable
Organisation
At KOMPAN it is our mission to take lead in the global market within the playground industry. With this in mind we have created a new organizational structure which can be compared to a butterfly. We call it “the butterfly organisation”. The butterfly is characterised by a small, strong body that helps to direct it towards its goal and large wings that create thrust.
At KOMPAN we have placed our international sales organisations called Centres of Excellence (CoE's) and our logistics and supply chain units out in the wings. In the body we find our headquarters, situated in Denmark, from where strategy, business and product development and administration emanate. This division enables us to keep a tight rein on things and navigate safely and swiftly.
Global growth
Today KOMPAN is Europe’s and one of the world’s leading specialists in innovative play solutions for all age groups.
The headquarters is situated in Denmark, but more than 95 % of the company’s turnover is generated outside Denmark through Centres of Excellence and representative offices located in Europe, North America, Asia/Pacific and The Middle East.
In order to meet the needs of a global supply organisation, KOMPAN has restructured its production setup over the past few years, and today the company’s main distribution centre is situated in Brno in the Czech Republic.
Since 2005 the company has been owned by the investor Nordic Capital.
