CANNING CIVIC GARDENS – Canning
1317 Albany Highway, Cannington, Western Australia
The City of Canning has designed two exciting playgrounds either side of a long earth mound. To the West of the mound an area for unsupervised older children. This area is planted with a maze of New Zealand Flax plants and partially protected with a low Weldmesh fencing. Irrigation sprinkler heads have been disguised as fence post caps to reduce the incidence of children tampering with the irrigation system.
The centre piece of the flax maze is the towering Corocord Large Spacenet – a unique pyramidical climbing net structure that stands in a square sand pit edged with limestone block walling. One corner is provided with rubber softfall and anyone can play!
To the east of the long earth mound is a secluded area intended for use by younger children, ‘toddlers’ accompanied by their parents. This area is provided with shaded benches from which parents can view the children playing. The toddler’s area can be characterised as a sand pit in which are located a number of small play items; Sunflower Swing, Red House, Blue House, Mermaid Fountain and You and Me. The sand is contained by a snaking perimeter track of wet poured rubber paving.
