| Our observations show that Story Makers draw children in with its exaggerated design and keeps them engaged in imaginative active play with its challenging activities and abundant manipulatives. Story Maker structures offer places for climbing, balancing, sliding, crawling, and socializing. The upper area provides ample room for many children to play and provides access to many activities on either side. The bright colors reinforce the multiple themes by signaling play and the soft shapes create a warm and comfortable setting. High-quality play equals pretend play. Pretend play involves language use and takes place in inviting social contexts like a Story Maker setting. Studies of pretense point to the development of social and linguistic competence vital for later school success.
