High Pressure Laminate Panels
High Pressure Laminate (HPL) is used for floors, steps and other places exposed to extensive wear. HPL is a homogenous material with a very high wearing strength and a high level of resistance to rot and fungal attack. HPL consists of wood fibers from recycled sources and a thermosetting binder, which is then compressed under high temperature and high pressure.
Polyethylene Panels
Panels made of colored-through high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is a material with very good wearing and impact strengths. Available in a number of standard colors, which are all approved in accordance with the Eurpean Standard EN 71-3 and tested for UV stability. HDPE is a thermoplastic material and can therefore be granulated and recycled in connection with disposal.
Plastics
A variety of plastics are used, selected for suitability, strength and environmental properties. The plastic components are identified by means of international standard abbreviations, allowing optimum recycling. All plastic components retain their properties in the temperature range of -86° F to 140° F. All plastic materials are UV and ozone protected to the maximum within the frames of the strongest environmental demands. Only plastic materials included in the EN 71 standard are used.
Polyamide (Nylon) – PA6 , Applications: Curved handholds, footholds, DO-NUT, WOOD-DO, net connectors, spacers, swing suspensions, etc.
Polyurethane – PUR, Applications: Swing seats, steps and rungs on slide access ways and bridges, binoculars, edges on crawl-through openings, etc.
Polypropylene – PP, Applications: Nets, KOMPAN bars, gear shifts, colored manipulative devices, sand scoops, sand pipes, etc.
Polycarbonate –PC, Applications: Various basins and funnels, etc.
Polyethylene – PE, Applications: Slides.
Larger hollow plastic parts
Slide beds, plastic spring ride bodies, etc. are made of polyethylene and rotation-molded.
Slide Beds
Slide beds are made of polyethylene and are rotationally molded. Slides are also available in stainless steel.
Bars
Bars are made of blue polypropylene with a core of electro-galvanized or stainless steel. They are used as space bars, handholds and as a safety device at slides and other openings.
Steel
All metal parts are dimensioned for heavy-duty, industrial application. Types of metal used are steel, stainless steel or brass. All joints above the ground are screwed or bolted joints.
Surface Treatment – To protect steel parts against corrosion, they are all subjected to one of the following basic treatments:
- Hot-Dip Galvanizing –
- Meets DS/ISO 1459, 1460 and 1461, classes A and C.
- Wet Painting After EC-Painting – Application of two coats of polyurethane paint in a layer thickness of at least 80 microns.
- Powder Coating – Surface-coating of components is carried out according to DS 412, corrosion classes 2 and 3.
KOMPAN Springs
Springs are made of steel qualities that meet DIN 17225. The springs are subjected to shot peening to prevent crack formation and fatigue fracture. Spring durability and expected life in use are tested on a sampling basis with a 140 lb. load and at 30° F to ascertain that the spring will function after more than 5 years of normal use. Springs are fitted with patented anti-pinch clamps of cast nylon or specially developed spring fittings.
Swing components
Swing suspensions are made with two separate suspensions, each consisting of a double ball bearing system with a swivel enclosed in a cast nylon housing. Crossbar is of hot-dip galvanized steel. Seats are fastened with a small-link, stainless steel chain with an inner opening of maximum 5/16 inches according to DIN 766B.
Nets and Ropes
KOMPAN nets are made of polypropylene with an inner steel cable reinforcement. Ultimate tensile strength of the rope is at least 5500 lb. All nets are fitted with die cast nylon net connectors and cable eye stiffeners. Nets are attached to wood structures by means of bolts.
Safety
All moving and rotating parts are secured against breakage and loosening of vital components. In safety critical cases, bolted connections are secured and covered with plastic after assembly. Uncovered bolts are fixed with anti-theft devices, which can only be removed by the use of special tools.
Posts
Produced in pine, dimensions 3 3/4 inches x 3 3/4 inches, full-squared, planed with edges radiused to a minimum of 5/16 inches. The posts are milled to minimize splitting and checking. Sapwood is cut and then profiled on all four sides to reduce radial tension. Post tops are domed or provided with a nylon cap. Heavy load connections to the posts are made by through bolts, and the Wood-Do compensates for the expansion/contraction of the wood.
Dimensioned Wood and Boards
The dimensions of handrails for staircases, bridges and bearer battens for floors are either 1 3/4 inches x 3 3/4 inches or 1 3/32 inches x 3 3/4 inches pine. This lumber is full-squared, planed and edge radiused to a minimum of 5/16 inches.
Floorboards
Floorboards are planed with top edges radiused to a minimum of 5/16 inches.
Crossbars
All crossbars for nets have a 30° angle profile on the top to discourage walking on the crossbar.
Pressure Impregnated Pine (Pinus Sylvestris)
Our columns are halved pine of a good quality and without dead knots. Pressure impregnated with Tanalith® E according to DS 2122/INSTA 140, class A (appropriate for in-ground application) under carefully controlled conditions to ensure minimal environmental impacts. The wood chosen for KOMPAN MOMENTS™ playground equipment contains no heavy metals and is arsenate-free. The conditioning process of the high quality pine, Pinus-Sylvestris, provides lasting durability and releases no air pollutants or wastewater. The conditioning preservative is Tanalith® E – in the US know as Wolman® E, and approved according to EN 351 and EN 599 and secures minimal environmental impact. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and CPSC (Consumer Products Safety Commission) have found Wolman® E safe for use on playgrounds and suggest handling methods similar to other treated wood products.
Hardwood
Rungs of ladders are made of hardwood with a diameter of 1 3/8 inches.
Tests
KOMPAN’s products and materials are not only tested according to the legislated safety standards in North America and Europe, but also to fulfill our own strong demands for non-normative described user safety, proved play value, and technical performance. (To ensure long lasting and durable components and materials, and to be able to provide a good warranty package)
Product testing Safety standards
KOMPAN products are designed to fulfill the relevant safety standards/guidelines on each market, and since we are a worldwide supplier, our products are normally approved by more than one institute/authority.
The major safety standards/guidelines are ASTM1487-98 (S), CPSC (G), and EN1176 (S).
KOMPAN is a member of the IPEMA organization in order to achieve certified ASTM-approvals of the products marketed on the North American continent, as well as all products has the international recognized TÜV-certificate for accordance to the EN1176 standard.
Strength/durability tests
All products must go through a static load test in order to achieve the ASTM certificates. In addition, KOMPAN maintains its tradition of also testing our products dynamically since our experience is that the repeated moving loads provided by playing children are much more crucial for the durability than a heavy static load.
Vandalism resistance is also an area where KOMPAN has defined our own guidelines, which in short terms can be expressed as:
The products must be able to withstand the forces and impacts that can be provided by the human body without using tools. To reduce the immediate risks for product safety in the event of vandalism, KOMPAN’s products are designed with steel reinforcement in ropes and rubber components, and use ductile plastic materials that prevent sharp edges when damaged.
Field tests
Before launch KOMPAN products are field tested at specially selected, heavily used playgrounds for extended periods of time. The focus of these tests is to evaluate technical performance, as well as play value and development of motor skills by frequent users.
Material tests:
KOMPAN’s choice of materials are normally followed up by testing the materials according to relevant standards within related areas such as building industry (flammability and corrosion), toy directives (toxicity), and we have also defined our own demands to e.g. friction and wear of flooring surfaces.
